Verse: I do not consider myself to have taken hold of it yet. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 3:13,14

Aimin’ to Take Hold

In this piece, the cowboy represents the Christian who is diligent at pressing on, always focused and setting his sights on what lies ahead—aiming at the goal.

To represent the trials we face, there is a hidden image of a prowling mountain lion in the background, crouched and ready to spring at the same “goal” the cowboy is after, as if to intercept and cut off his attempt.

I hadn’t planned to hide the face of Jesus in this one, even with much encouragement from my wife to do so. One day she walked in and I had just finished the clouds in the upper right corner, and she said “Oh good, you decided to put Jesus’ face in.” She had to point it out to me. It was a bit rough in form, so I did a little fixin’ and concluded that it was supposed to be there.
